History Phone FAQ
(Frequently Asked Questions)
What is History Phone?
History Phone is a prerecorded audio walking tour of local historical or notable sights
or exhibits in your community or museum. Rather than use a special audio player,
users access the tour from their cell phones (or, actually, any telephone).
How can we use History Phone to raise money for our organization?
History Phone is an excellent fundraising vehicle. Please see our page on
Fundraising.
Is there any charge for users to call History Phone?
No. History Phone is provided free of charge to all callers. The only charge (if any)
is for the local telephone call itself.
Why is there a maximum of nine narrations on a History Phone tour?
History Phone tours are designed to be operated as simply as possible, and with
smaller institutions/organizations in mind. Users make their selections by entering a
single digit (from 1 to 9) on their phones.
What if we have more than nine sights to include in our History Phone tour?
If you have more that nine sights you can set up multiple History Phone tours (at a
discount, of course), or you can take advantage of a larger
Cellbee
audio tour system
(able to accommodate literally thousands of narrations on one tour). Please be sure
to contact us to discuss your needs and ideas.
Who writes the History Phone dialogue?
We work closely with you to create your History Phone tour. Our staff collaborates
with yours on each script to make sure it meets with your approval as well as our
specifications. If you instead choose to do-it-yourself, we'll stand by with coaching and
guidance as needed.
Our our exhibits and grounds are not historical in nature. Do you have a cellular tour guide product for us?
Our
Cellbee
(tm)
Cellular Tour Guide is technically identical to History Phone (indeed,
History Phone is powered by the
Cellbee
platform). The pricing is also similar,
making
Cellbee
the perfect choice for non-historical cellular guided tours.
Aren't visitors worried about using expensive cell phone minutes?
Not usually. Most cell phone users are less concerned about minute usage than they used
to be and rarely let such concerns discourage cell phone use. Cell phone calling plans
now offer more and more minutes for less money, and evening and weekend minutes are
often free. What's more, many carriers are now offering unlimited calling plans.
We find cell phone conversations to be a distraction and an annoyance in our facility and we discourage cell phone use. Wouldn't a History Phone tour pose a conflict?
Not really. History Phone poses no more of an annoyance that any other personal
audio listening device. Callers are strictly listening on their phone, not talking,
thereby annoying no one. Cell phone policies can easily be amended to allow for
History Phone listening only.
We already offer a guided audio tour via a dedicated listening device. Why should we consider History Phone?
History Phone can either replace or supplement your current audio tour program.
History Phone is more easily updated (immediately in real time if necessary), can be
easily customized and can be set up for special exhibits and tours. History Phone
eliminates concerns over damage or loss to rented or loaned equipment. History
Phone is incredibly convenient in an outdoor or community scenario, such as viewing
historic sights and landmarks.
